Many massage therapists only focus on treating the symptoms of musculoskeletal pain and soft-tissue dysfunction, not the cause. However, at Resilience Clinical Myotherapy and Remedial Massage South Melbourne, our treatment method is different. At Resilience we take a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to both assessment and treatment. This approach targets the cause of the presenting concern, not just the symptoms. An ongoing  clinical myotherapy and remedial massage management plan is provided. This may also include take home exercises and stretches, ensuring that injury resolution is lasting. At Resilience Clinical Myotherapy and Remedial Massage South Melbourne, our treatment method is a highly effective tool for injury management. Regardless of whether the management goal is preventative, corrective, or restorative.

What is Myotherapy?

Myotherapy is a relatively new healthcare profession that has, in part, evolved out of the western tradition of remedial massage. More specifically, myotherapy is a modern, scientific approach to manual soft tissue therapy. Myotherapy can effectively treat a broad range of neuromusculoskeletal conditions (muscle, joint, and nerve dysfunction) using evidence-based assessment, treatment and rehabilitation techniques.

Myotherapy shares many techniques in common with massage and both are primarily concerned with the treatment of soft tissue dysfunction. However, myotherapy differs to massage in three key aspects. They are:

  1. Assessment

  2. Treatment Techniques

  3. Exercise prescription

A myotherapist will generally spend more time thoroughly assessing posture and functional movement patterns than is typical in a massage consultation. In addition to the treatment techniques commonly used by massage therapists, a myotherapist will also use muscle energy technique and dry-needling. Muscle energy technique uses the natural contractile action of muscles to lengthen soft tissue and restore normal range of movement to joints and vertebrae. Dry-needling is the employment of acupuncture needles to deactivate painful and debilitating trigger points, otherwise known as ‘knots’, in muscle tissue.

Finally, rehabilitative exercise prescription is also a unique feature of myotherapy sessions. Exercise prescription ensures that changes to soft tissue are lasting and that the cause, not just the symptoms of the presenting problem are addressed.

How Clinical Myotherapy Works

At Resilience Clinical Myotherapy and Remedial Massage South Melbourne, treatment focuses on identifying and treating the cause of the problem, instead of temporarily alleviating symptoms. Much common musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction is the result of a strength or flexibility imbalance across opposing muscle groups. One muscle group is usually short, tight and overused. The opposing muscle group is long weak and underused. Furthermore, there is a multitude of factors that can cause these imbalances. They include:

  • a lack of variety in load and movement patterns in daily life (e.g. sitting in front of a desk and computer eight hours a day)
  • faulty body-mechanics used in sports technique
  • connective tissue or fascial restriction
  • poor circulation
  • scar tissue from injury
  • overload of specific muscles due to the repetitive nature of sports activity or work life
  • poorly designed strength training and rehabilitation programs that do not provide balanced strength across complimentary muscle groups.

At Resilience Clinical Myotherapy and Remedial Massage South Melbourne, our treatment approach has been clinically proven to provide lasting resolution to many of these soft-tissue dysfunctions. Treatments are designed to suit individual requirements and comfort levels, restoring normal range of movement, muscle length and function throughout the body.

There is a common misconception within the sports medicine industry and the general public that myotherapy and remedial massage must be hard and painful to be clinically effective. This assumption is incorrect. Effective clinical myotherapy and remedial massage treatment should always be precise, gentle, cause minimum discomfort, and provide immediately discernible results. By attempting to forcefully ‘bulldoze’ through muscular restriction, the unsophisticated therapist will trigger a ‘fight or flight’ response, resulting in cortisol release throughout the body. Cortisol is a stress hormone that increases muscular tension, anxiety levels, and suppresses the immune system. Therefore, the sophisticated therapist will always work gently with the body, encouraging an endorphin response instead. Endorphins are a natural muscle relaxant. They reduce stress, induce relaxation and promote a general sense of well being.

Techniques used at Resilience Clinical Myotherapy and Remedial Massage South Melbourne may include:

  • deep tissue massage
  • muscle energy technique
  • trigger point therapy
  • myofascial release
  • cross fibre friction
  • cupping
  • functional fascial taping
  • dry-needling
  • stretching
  • exercise prescription

All techniques are evidence-based, scientifically proven approaches, with a substantial body of research to support their clinical efficacy. To fast track recovery, remedial massage therapy is also complemented with take-home exercises and stretches, to be completed outside of appointment times. Ongoing management plans are provided to ensure that recovery and pain relief is lasting and permanent.
